Love

Recently as I read the scripture, I again happened upon the children of Israel poised on the brink of the promised land. They came through the wilderness, had seen miracles, heard the voice of God, seen the cloud by day and the fire by night all as part of the preparation for their future.

As I read these words, I was offended by the continual backsliding of the children of Israel. How could a person, let alone an entire people be plagued by such an unwarranted lack of faith? God had shown more love and outpouring of blessings upon this people, and they kept looking backward.

At every bobble or pebble in the road, it seemed that they would attempt to return to Eygpt. They would complain that God, or Moses or God and Moses had brought them to the desert to starve or die at the hand of their enemy. Such a profound lack of faith from a people that had seen so much. How could this be?

But as usually happens when I’m pointing my boney finger at someone else, I realize that I have a bunch pointing back at me. I started thinking about how God has always been faithful to bring me, again and again to the brink of revival. I’m given the opportunity to see the Promised Land from just across the river. I have the tools at my disposal to defeat what stands in my way and enter into God’s promises. But then, like Peter and so often the Children of Isreal, I take my eyes off of God and start looking at the obstacles in my path. I hesitate and end up convincing myself that I don’t have what it takes.

The truth is I don’t have what it takes, NONE of us do! Our only hope is in Jesus, in the Name that is above every name. God has brought us out, delivered us from evil, placed our boot-heel on the neck of the enemy and shown us revival, but we hesitate, we doubt, we fear, we fail.

The Children of Isreal were plagued with failures, bondage, defeat, more bondage, wondering, scattering, and near annihilation. I believe they were obligated to serve Him and never, as a nation developed a True Love for God, only a sense of obligation.

Our walk, our Salvation is based on Love. What He did to purchase it, what we must do to receive it, really receive it was and is initiated by True Love. Loving God is the most satisfying thing that a person can do. Loving God will change your heart, will change your mind, will change the way you pray and change the way you want to live.

Had the Israelites been head over heels in love with God they would have followed Him anywhere, never hesitating. I believe that Christians have got to learn to Love God. Often I believe that we try to instill all the obligation parts of Christianity into new converts before we help them develop the profound Love that will guide them better and further than rules and obligations.

I need to spend some time working on that, and I recommend that we all take a little time away from the normal. Just for a little bit, lay aside everything that you think you know about God. Lay aside every idea about what it takes to be saved, every idea and thought about doctrine, every ritual, and tradition and Focus on LOVING the Creator, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Him. Don’t ask for anything, just LOVE Him. Love Him until your Heart Melts, until the tears flow like rivers until everything that holds you back and restricts you fall away.

When I read about the Children of Israel, I’m really reading about me. When I’m angry at their continual backsliding, it’s actually the shame of my true self being exposed to light. But if I can learn to Love Him that first Loved me, then I can learn to please Him, I can learn to Love You and learn to be a better man.

The old saying goes “If you live for God hard, it’ll be easy, but if you try to live for Him easy, it’ll be hard.” I still believe the premise of that is true, but I believe, that at least for me that if I Love God, really learn to Love God first that He’ll guide me through the hard parts, hold me close to Him and show me how to live and how to die. Loving God Hard will show you that there is no other life but Life in Him.

I hope this makes sense and blesses someone as much as I’ve been blessed by it.

Brando

I was honored to be asked to speak at the life celebration service for a dear cousin and quiet man, Guitar Man, Brandon Claude Smith.  Words cannot make the hurt go away and can’t really bring an understanding of why things happen the way they do. But I have learned that trusting God, trusting that God understands and has a purpose, at least for me, helps me to cope.  My heart breaks for our family, time will help us move forward, carrying his memory with us and as one of his nephews said eventually, our tears will be replaced smiles when we remember, when we share the stories of the Guitar Man.

Brando

Hero, noun

  1. a) a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities

I am drawn to the heroes of my youth, when sizing up or testing the metal of an acquaintance or when meeting someone for the first time.
My daddy, John Wayne, Davey Crocket, and Tarzan were the heroes of my childhood, the ones I wanted to emulate and probably unfairly their characteristics make up the gauge I use to measure all others.
They shared attributes that I see as the mark of a man and so to this day I use them to determine the quality of character in myself and others.

I realize that two of the four listed were fictional or fictionalized characters from history and one was an actor that played the same basic person in every movie he was in. But they, along with several other real people from my life share strength and quietness that I look for when looking for guidance or advice. They were not perfect, far from it, they had flaws that were visible to anyone intent on finding them and unfortunately, faults tend to be more visible to those closest to us. These men or characters held a place in the shaping and molding of my perception of how a man should talk, act and what he should stand for and even how they walk or carry themselves.

Maybe it’s because of how I perceive a strong leader that I associate some of the Qualities of my childhood heroes to Jesus Christ as well.  And certainly, as a minister and a man of faith, He is my ultimate Hero. As I understand scripture, He was also strong, both physically and mentally, He spoke when he needed to and remained silent otherwise, often it was his actions that spoke louder than his words.  He wasn’t afraid of work and met challenges head-on further solidifying the perception of what I consider a mans, man or what defines a true Hero to me.  However, in the example of Jesus, He did it all with no character flaws, no failures, no sin. All to pay the Ultimate Price for our sins, that we might have life and have it more abundantly.

It’s with these memories and ideas that I measure men and women, my Hero Test if you will.  Now, I’m not saying it’s a scientific test, completely accurate or that it would even satisfy your idea of a Hero, but, to me, a Hero is one that stands for right,
stands for family, and lives according to a code, the code. Does what they were put here to do, what they were called to do it, not necessarily according to societies rules or ideas.
Not perfect, but perfectly fitting into the space that God placed them in.

When I think of a hero, I don’t think of a man with a cape or a suit armor.  I think of men and women that selflessly give themselves for their family.  Doing the right thing when no one is looking, being kind to the weakest among us.
Men and women that sell their time, working to feed and clothe that gives themselves for the good of their family.  That teaches and lives right, in front of their family and peers.  The real heroes are not the ones that always get the credit, the notoriety, or their names up in lights.  They work, and struggle and give, expecting little in return
They bring a quiet calm into our lives, They have walked some hard roads, and can show others where to walk and where not to.  They are the strength of their families,

The backbone of communities, Friends of us all, but not afraid to take a stand regardless of whether they have to stand alone.
When we have these kinds of people in our lives, it’s important that we pay attention,
That we cherish our time with them, that we capture the lessons that often they don’t even realize they’re teaching us.
This is the sum, at least in my mind, of the Heroes of this world.
I am for Sure and for Certain that I’m not the only one that Feels this way.
Their often unspoken message to the rest of us would be to hug more, smile more, to talk to God more and to each other more, forgive more, forget more, live more, Love more!

He was a singer,
A natural-born guitar ringer.
Kind of a clinger,
To sad old songs.
Not a walk-behinder
a new note finder
And his name will forever be a reminder,
Of a guitar man that’s too soon gone

God Bless You Richly,
Greg

How Oft

My last blog post was “Things Change”  which I posted a couple weeks ago.  When I wrote that, I had no idea what changes were in store for me. I’d been kicking around some ideas for the future, but couldn’t really see a way that I’d be able to accomplish them.  When I try to figure things out, I’m limited to what I know and what I can imagine. God’s ways are above mine. When He inspired me with the framework of these ideas, He already had the details worked out. All my fretting and figuring didn’t even scratch the surface of what God already had in motion.
When you can’t see a way out just know that God has doors that you don’t even know about.  He has a way that the vulture knows nothing about.  He has a Way where there seemeth to be NO WAY.  Greg’s inability to figure out God’s plan has no bearing on God’s ability to fulfill it.

It reminds me that so often we go through life wearing the blinders of this life.  I tend to look at things through a very narrow window.  Only seeing what is in the lens of that moment but so often my focus is not on God’s Plan, it’s on my wants or my problems.  I must practice and make a habit of bringing God into the picture, into focus from the beginning.

I recently posted a comment on facebook about how that in photography, especially video, that the main subject is in focus, but everything else becomes blurry.
In life, if my focus is indeed on Jesus, then the problems and the cares and concerns of this world become less focused and fade into the background.  The opposite is also true, in that, if you focus on the problems, or on the successes or on your own plans then Jesus fades into the background of your life. Then when you face a need and start to look for Him, He’s no longer in the frame at all.  Not by His choice but by our neglect.

So, I traveled to work this morning and was singing as I often do, the words of this little chorus started flowing, just the little chorus. Then later, as I went about my day the rest of the lines began filling in, and I figured I’d better write them down.
I’m fully aware that this is God speaking to me and chastening me. But if there’s something that you can learn from this, from my lesson then take it.

How Oft

How Oft I would have called you out
How Oft I would have used thee
How Oft I would have called you out
but Often you refuse me

Refusals rarely put in words
but actions and in deeds
Ignoring when I call your name
My call you do not heed

I wanted most to be the one
on whom you would Depend
To be beside you all the way
To be your closest Friend

If you would listen
And talk to Me some too
there’d be no Situation
We can’t get through

Everything I’ve ever done
has been with you in mind
To bring you Peace and Love and Joy
No better Frind you’ll find

How Oft will you receive of Me
And let Me be your All
I’ll open Heavens Windows
Won’t you heed my Call

This may all seems a little scattered, but it all flows from the same place and fits together perfectly in my head and heart.
God has a plan, the success of His plan for me doesn’t require my understanding only my participation.

God Bless You Richly

Things Change

As I ponder the events of recent days, the loss of a friend, the storms in Florida, and several situations within my close family I’m reminded of how temporary things are and how quickly things can change. The Bible tells us that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Hold on to that, there is comfort in that promise.

One of my favorite quotes and one that I’ve used often is:

“There are only two constants in the universe –
God Almighty and Change”

God never changes, everything else does.

All the planning and programs in the world cannot prevent or prepare you for the changes that may occur in the next 15 seconds, minutes, hours or days. I venture to say that no one has ever said from their deathbed: “Huh, that went exactly as I planned it.”

Change is part of the deal.  I believe that God allows change to help us realize how temporary things really are.  To help us look not to the temporal but to the eternal.

Some people like change, others do not.  Either way, it’s important to realize that Change is part of God’s plan.  The Bible likens God’s people as Sheep, Soldiers, and Pilgrims.  Common to all those is that movement and change is part of their existence.  It’s part of this life that God has called us to.

I personally crave change, love change.  My own mother has said of me “If you plant anything it should be planted in a pot so you can take it when you move because you’re gonna move.”

But above everything else, I am a Christian.  God has to be first with everything else taking its place behind Him and His Plan.  To please Him is my first and foremost task or at least it should be.  After that is, Family, Church, job and so on!  I must realize that to please God I must Love Him, Believe in Him and Trust Him.  I must trust Him in All, or I’m not really trusting Him at All.  That’s easy to say, harder to live.  Lord, I believe, help thou my unbelief.

My plans will come to nothing if they are not also God’s plans.  “This world is not my home, I’m just passing through, my treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue.”  The important things in this life are the things that will affect my eternity, the things that I can take with me and the things that will help me to get there.  The Beauty of living for God and truly Loving Him is that there is no better Life.  Even surrounded by change it is a life filled with Joy and Peace.  Peace in the midst of the storm, peace that is beyond understanding.

When change happens our first instinct is to resist or push back, but through the lens of time, we often realize what we thought was the end was actually God giving us a new beginning.

Things Change,

God Bless You Richly

In The Wind or On the Ground

Several years ago, more now than it probably seems, I was traveling home one evening, well after dark.  As I turned onto T. Fee Road something off to the side of the road caught my attention.  First, I noticed a big house cat and it was acting a little odd, so I stopped to see what was going on. As I watched from my vehicle, the cat seemed to have something tree’d in one of the small bushes or pine seedlings next to the road.  He was toying with whatever it was as if he had a plan, knew he was in complete control and could just take his time.  Essentially he was playing with his food.
It turns out that he was tormenting a flying squirrel.  I don’t know much about flying squirrels and have only seen a few in the wild in my lifetime.  A few things I do know is that Flying Squirrel’s main defense is not to defend at all, but to run, or more aptly to glide to safety.

Flying squirrels can’t fly, but using a flap of skin which connects their front legs to their back legs and body, they glide through the air.  When they jump off an elevated object and stretch out their legs, they can glide between branches and trees or down to the ground as a means of escape or simply as a mode of transportation.
Somehow this little rodent had ended up on the ground and had been caught by the cat.  As I observed, the cat would bat the squirrel around, hold it down with his paws and then let it go. The frightened squirrel would run a short distance before the big cat would easily catch it again and start his cruel game all over.
The cat ran off when I approached to get a closer look.  The little squirrel was so exhausted that I thought the squirrel would not survive, but miraculously he did.
As I pondered the little flying squirrel’s battle of life and death, it reminded me of the battles that every one of us faces at one time or another.  The enemy always wants to have the upper hand, he wants us to be under his control and playing by his rules.  I want to remind you that God placed the serpent’s neck under our boot heel way back in Genesis and that he is not, nor ever has been the rule maker.  His lies and deception are designed to get you to surrender to him, that is where his power over you comes from. The devil doesn’t control anything that has not surrendered to him in some way.

Satan is not the only force at work either, there is another force equally as menacing, that I believe the devil is often falsely accused of or given credit for. And that is the Self-Will of mankind. The man in the mirror is probably the Devils best friend and closest ally.

In my mind, I can see the old forked tailed, slimy devil making his rounds to check on his progress. Some houses he’ll stop by and whisper doubt, the next house he may spread some hate or a seed or two of jealousy.  Then he gets to a house where self-will is in control, he just smiles and says “Gregory’s got this, nothing needed from me today, good job.”

God’s Love is the key. He has given us every tool needed to succeed in this life, and his word holds the answers. God never intended His word to be secret, salvation is in the word of God, but I believe it’s the Love of God that illuminates the Word. He never intended us to stumble in darkness. He never intended us to be on an even playing field with sin or the devil.

The flying squirrel’s security is not only in his wings, but even more important is the elevation. Sure he has the same wings on the ground, but they are useless if not a hindrance on the ground.  For his wings to work, he must be elevated, living high up in the trees. When troubles come he doesn’t have to panic; he simply dives into the sanctuary of the air that God has built into his existence.

As a Christian, the elevation of our walk is also key to our security. We must dwell in the presence of God always.  Loving God first, putting Him First and allowing Him to put us where He will.  Not self-righteous, not looking down on others as if we’re somehow better, but merely living where God intended us to live, in His Spirit.

Trying to live in the world, as a Christian, without truly dwelling in His presence is a lesson in frustration and frankly a waste of time. The wings that carry you from place to place and out of danger while living in His will, only cause you to be isolated and not really a part of either world when not in God’s will.

I’m reminded of the seven sons of Sceva in the book of Acts, they wanted to be part of something big but did not have the power within them. They used the right words but had not the authority of the Name. They tried to command a demon in Jesus name without the power of that name within them. The demon possessed man leaped on them, beat on them a bit and drove them away.

How can I live this way? How can I maintain a walk truly in the spirit? Truly reciprocated Love. God’s Love to us is without question. Once I fall deeply, truly, unashamedly, undeniably, head over heels, can’t get enough of His presence, in Love with Jesus Christ then I will live for Him, truly Live for Him.  When His Love starts to spill over onto the world around me, then old things will pass away, and all things become new.  When His will and unction outweighs the questions, doubts, and fears.  I know that we are flesh and bone and prone to fleshly mistakes. And sometimes we fall, but like God allowed me to rescue that squirrel He is never far away and will rescue us from our own folly if we will call on Him.

God bless you richly,

Greg

Evolution

Today is basically just a journal entry, what follows is my heart or at least part of it.  These thoughts and others like them have flooded my consciousness for months.  I write a lot more than I post here and often have four, five or more things on the burner, some of which never move on to a blog post and are just that, my journal.  This is a journal entry that I felt like I needed to share.

Evolution

I have a very narrow view of world history, I don’t really consider myself close-minded or unwilling to listen to someone else’s view, but what I believe is literally what the Bible says.
Science believes it has disproven the Bible and that God has no part in the modern world. Science can be subjective, and usually, the conclusions lean the direction of the tester’s thoughts and ideas.  Much of what is called science and taught as fact is actually Theory.
Miriam Webster says that a Theory is (A) a hypothesis assumed for the sake of argument or investigation. Or (B) an unproved assumption: CONJECTURE.  I had a coach in High School, Coach Laird that very eloquently taught me about assuming things and I’ll never forget that lesson. The lesson was given after a few bad decisions were made by some of the starting 5 basketball players and me, I will elaborate no further.  The Lesson was that to ASSUME makes the first 3 letters of that word out of the 4th letter and the 5th and 6th letters together. I hope I’ve explained that well enough.

So the bottom line, for me is that I’d rather believe in an All Powerful, All Knowing Creator and not always understand His ways than to accept the opinion or theory of any man or scientist as to why God’s Word is not true.  Honestly, they’ve come too late to tell me differently, my mind is made up.

As a Christian of 31+ years and a minister for just a little less than that, I’ve seen a lot of changes in the church, some for the better, some…I’ll just leave that there.  There is a Biblical requirement for leadership, correction, and reproof.  But Love must be the foundation for, the initiator of and the completion of Leadership, Correction, and Reproof.  If Love is not our motivation then what is?

1 John 4: 7 & 8 says, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

Everything that God has ever done was for Love, chiefly to the salvation of mankind.  The Purpose of the Church is outreach, winning souls by His Love through us.
I see a world groping in the darkness, rejecting the Light and in many cases a religious world so fractured, so focused on the trivial and trying to be so politically correct that sometimes I’m afraid we may be shining our little light in the wrong directions.  We have to share unyielding, unchanging, Bible salvation straight from the Heart of God to a lost and dying world. Not adding to or taking away from the Literal Word of God Almighty that says Jesus is the Way, the Truth and The Light! That through His Death, Burial and Resurrection Salvation was purchased and made available to us.

Christians should cherish and appreciate the opportunity to be in God’s presence.  To enter into His presence with Thanksgiving and Praise and also with Fear and Reverence.
How we dress, at all times, not just when we are at church is important, especially from a modesty standpoint.  I don’t believe we should come to church dressed like we are going to a club or the gym.  As the Church though, we have to be careful that pride is not our motivation for the way we dress and that we are not so overdressed that it becomes some sort of stumblingblock to sinners and new converts.  Kind of a Fine Line there I guess, but is God’s first impression really what we have on or if our clothes are nice or in style? Should ours be?

1 Samual 16:7 “But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”

The Bible speaks more negatively about the putting on of Costly Array than it does about dressing any particular way, other than in modestly and to your own gender.  Like I said earlier, I’ve been a preacher for 30+ years, but I’ve never really been a real suit guy.  I have suits, and I wear suits, but I’d much rather wear jeans with a nice shirt than an ill-fitting, overpriced suit.
The tie debacle always gets me as well, the buying new ties every year or so because they had to be skinny, now they need to be wide or vice versa.

But before you burn me at the stake for being a heretic, consider this. God had a religious organization set up according to His direct instruction, a Ministry, if you will, dressed according to the explicit plan of God Almighty, but that was not fulfilling God’s purpose.  When God got ready for a revival that would change everything who did he send? One of those sharp-dressed men from the established church? No, He sent one clothed in Camel skin, eating locusts and wild honey and The One that was born in a barn and that had “not where to lay his head.” And they shook things up for certain!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the Church is wrong, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t go to church, do our best, give our best, by all means, we should, we must. I’m not saying that God is not using the Ministry or the Church or that revival isn’t happening within the church today, I know that it is.
But speaking for me, I  feel led to take my eyes off the appearance of people and look to the needs of their Heart and their stomachs.  I want to be a fisher of men and a feeder of men and let God be the changer of men.  I feel compelled to try to see Mankind through the eyes of the Master not the eyes of my flesh.  As I’ve seen the hand of God at work in my life, in a different way than ever before and I’ve also seen Him working in the lives of people around me.  I’ve noticed Him working in people that I’ve not always seen eye to eye with. I’ve realized that there’s a lot about God that I don’t completely understand.  I still believe what I’ve always believed, but I’ve also asked God to give me wisdom, knowledge, and understanding beyond anything I’ve ever known, to show me where He wants me, what He wants me to do when I get there, and who He wants me to minister to.  As I pray these prayers and try to listen for God’s voice, I find myself craving His presence more than ever before. I feel almost compelled to go places I’ve never been, to do things I’ve never done and to try and find commonalities where I’ve only seen differences before.  I’ve also realized that pleasing Him is way more important to me than fitting in, being popular or even being comfortable.  I feel like the most blessed man alive and hungry for all that God has in store.

Just like my view of History, my view of the Future is wrapped up in believing the whole word of God.  Allowing God to take the wheel and knowing that His Word is Literally the road map to Heaven.

I hope that this has somehow blessed and encouraged.

Awl or Nothing

In Exodus 21, as the Law is being handed down the topic turns to the treatment of servants or more rightly slaves.  Exodus chapter 21 explains the treatment of Hebrew slaves. The male Hebrew servant could only be kept for in bondage for 6 years and then must be freed. If he had a wife or a family when he was enslaved, they would go out free with him, however, if his master gave him a wife, she and her children would stay in slavery.  He could go free at the end of his term, but his wife and children would remain the property of their master.

Here’s one part of this passage that always intrigues me, if the man did not want to leave his wife and was content to serve his master for the rest of his life he could give his freedom back to the master. Once this was fully decided, he and his master would go before the judges and then go to the doorpost, and the master would punch a hole through the ear of the servant with an awl.  The hole through his ear was a sign to all that he was forever the property of his master.  Image result for primitive awl

The decision was permanent, there was no going back, no recourse, he would remain a servant for all his days.

As I ponder the attributes of a successful Christian walk I realize that like the contented servant we must be willing to lay aside ourselves, our self-will and every weight and sin, we must be sold out, completely, wholly devoted to serving Jesus.  I see the parallel in this commandment of our need to be irrevocably, publicly sold out, no recourse, no plan B, no other option.  All our eggs in Jesus’ basket, all the bridges to our past lives burned and demolished.  We get in trouble when we try to hang on to both sides or when we hold on to part of the old man as a safety net.  As the old saying goes ‘if you live hard for Jesus it’s easy, but if you try to live easy it’ll be hard”.  No man can serve two masters.
And No, you don’t need to poke a hole in your ear to prove your devotion, but your dedication should be clearly evident in your life, by your actions, your associations and your zeal for Jesus.

We must also remember that we and every person we know are humans and prone to make mistakes.  Subject to slip and sometimes even fall, errors are in our nature, and we are not and will never be perfect.
Jesus said, “there is none good but one.”
Micah 7:8 says “ Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: WHEN I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.

Don’t be too quick to judge others because they stumble.  Have compassion and pray for them to overcome.  Pray for God’s wisdom, knowledge, and understanding for you and for them.
Don’t be so quick to give up when you stumble.  Daily repentance is an excellent practice. Take the time in prayer to backtrack through yesterday and clean house before God. Ask the Lord to forgive and cleanse you of any and everything that is contrary to His will.  It will also help you realize your weaknesses and help you know what to avoid tomorrow.

Never be too proud to ask for forgiveness, not from God or from man.  If you make a mistake, own and learn from it, otherwise you are destined to make it again.

The Wife
The 2nd thought that came to mind has to do with the Servant Wife that was not eligible for release with her husband.  In the cases where the husband stayed, it was partially her love and devotion, both to her husband and to the master that helped the freed husband decide to remain a servant, to stay in the Masters House.
I grew up in a household where one of my parents was faithful to God, and the other was not.  As a direct result of Momma’s faithfulness and dedication the majority of the 50 or so kids, grandkids, great and soon to be great-great grandkids are now living for God.  We also had the honor of baptizing my father toward the end of his life.
The importance of being faithful to God in front of your family and friends, especially those that are not saved cannot be stressed enough.  I’m definitely not talking about being preachy, or judgey with them, just being faithful, being the example, being a stabilizing force in their lives and being sensitive to God in dealing with them.

There is no life like serving God, but to be successful, and to be a good servant to the King you must be wholly devoted, sold-out and dedicated to His cause.

Lord, take me to the doorpost of Your house and consecrate me to You.
It is genuinely Awl or Nothing.

May God Bless You Richly

Look at Me

Written by Rev. Dustin Midkiff

“Look at me!” I exclaimed for what seemed like the millionth time. Truthfully, I don’t know how many times I had made that simple request, but it was enough that now the frustration was evident in my voice. My son, now aware that he had crossed a line pulled himself back to reality and quickly met my gaze. After explaining again why it was important for him to perform whatever menial task I had asked of him I followed it up with, “Goodness, son! I wish you’d learn to listen.” That scenario is repeated daily in our home. We have small children, so it’s just a fact of life. Why was this one different? I’m so glad you asked.

It’s no secret to anyone who has been a part of the Body of Christ for any significant amount of time that sometimes it gets tough. There will be times when it feels like the darkness will strangle you. Times when it seems like your last hope has walked out on you and you are left to face the enemy completely alone. Times when it feels like your prayers are sucked up by the vacuum of space almost before they reach your lips. Times when the dollar signs and zeros on a screen tell you that your much hoped for blessing hasn’t arrived in time to save you from financial distress. I know, I’ve been there, it isn’t pleasant.

So, why remind us of it? Isn’t it better not to think of such things? How does this help the situation? Truthfully, I don’t know why I’m sharing this today. Perhaps it has no effect on you. Maybe everything is going your way with no distress in sight. There’s no way for me to know outside you sharing it with me. However, given my own recent struggles I want to share something with you.

Today I was reminded of a scripture in Hosea chapter 2 verses 14 and15.

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.”

Why does it have to be the wilderness? Why can’t God speak the words of comfort to me in a place of comfort? It’s dark in the wilderness. There are dangers there that one might avoid by staying nearer to the safety of home. It’s so quiet when you’re alone in the wild places. Why here? What’s so special about the wilderness?

That’s question I was asking. The answer I got was to be reminded of that frustrating interaction with my son. I suddenly became aware of what God had been trying to say. “Look at me! Just look at me! Instead of being distracted by the chaos and noise of the struggle…just look at me! I had to bring you out into the darkness and solitude of the desert place because you couldn’t hear me where you were! Now that we are here, I just want you to listen.”

Perhaps God is saying the same thing to you? Is it a bit overwhelming where you are? Does it seem like the darkness might actually win this time? Does the giant look bigger than ever today? Maybe it’s time to go out into the night, gaze up at the stars and say…”God I just came to listen. I’ll still be right here when you are ready to speak.” Give it a try. Maybe, just maybe you’ll hear Him say…”The way out of the storm is this way, Child…I’ve been waiting for you to follow me so I could show you the way.”

Be Blessed,

Bro. Dustin

Comfortable Christianity

Some of what follows has been discussed here before, but I believe needs to be said.

Paul told the Corinthian Church to follow him, even as he follows Christ.

2 Timothy 2:15 tells us to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

and then Philippians 2:12 says to “….work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

I’m not asking anyone to take my word for anything.  I hope that the messages posted here and this Blog for that matter encourage you to dig, to study to prove or disprove.  To have a revelation of your own and not to be satisfied with anything less.

The Journey
For years, I lived a life, my Christian Life anyway, that was pretty bland, comfortable.  As a man, I’ve done some pretty cool, or maybe exciting things would be a better way to put it, but as a Christian, I’ve always played it safe.  I’ve never pushed the boundaries or really gotten too far out of “The Box” in my thinking.  Taking peoples word for what the scripture “means” even when I didn’t understand it that way or necessarily agree with them.  I tried really hard not to rock the boat, make waves or cause confusion.  It was very important to me not to be labeled as a rebel as well.
One of the worst things, in my opinion, that I’ve ever been told was that I was very politically correct.  I was and am very offended by that, not that someone said it, but that it was true.  I believe the whole Political Correctness Movement and whatever they are calling it now is a ploy to shame the church into silence.

A little less than a year ago I had an epiphany (in the “illuminating discovery” sense of the word).  I saw the blah, vague, useless creature that I was, in the light of God’s Word.  My Christian walk had become little more than a title that I hung on to like a security blanket.  Carrying it around like a birthright of peace and comfort.  Never really considering the cost of True Christianity and only calling on the Savior to bail me out of pits that I’d gotten myself into. Not caring or looking to the needs of others, outside of my little circle.  Once I saw me in God’s Light I fell on my face before Him and begged for forgiveness.
God was gracious, and not only forgave but began to restore. He began to build upon the foundation of what was left of my initial experience, as that was about all that was left.  The structure that began to take shape doesn’t look exactly like the old one.  He changed things about me that I didn’t realize were broken. He made me a completely new creature on the inside, my likes are different, my interests are different, my compassion is different, my walk is much different, much more intense and alive.
God is NOT different. He is the Same! His Word is the same, forever settled.
I have confidence in Him that I didn’t know I needed.  I felt compelled to take a Literal approach to the Word of God.  Measuring every aspect of Christianity by the Literal Word of God.  We will be judged by His Word, so it is very important that we understand it.  If the Bible is the Literal Word of God, which I believe it is, then shouldn’t we take it literally?

I’m still a little nervous about being labeled a rebel or a radical, but I also know without a doubt the direction that God is calling me in.  He directed me to start this blog, but as it has progressed, I’ve fallen into a rut of not wanting to rock the boat, not wanting to upset anyone, very cautious not to offend.

This morning, as I went about my morning devotion walk, I felt the reassuring presence of God telling me that He didn’t call me to be normal, to fit in, or to replay Sunday and Wednesday messages. He called me to bridge gaps, to shake things up, to help wake the Giant!  He called me to speak to His Church, whoever that is and regardless of my ideas of who that is.  I am his servant, first and foremost, and want to please Him above all others.
I am simply a minister, a servant of God, and my message is to the Church, to the Pastors, to the Saints, and to the Sinners.  I’m not lifted up above anyone, just speaking to the body, from the body, as the Spirit leads.

Comfortable!
Christianity is not a cake walk, it’s not going to easy.  God never promised that it would be.
They Killed the One it was founded on and that it is Named for.
Eleven of the original twelve members died violent deaths as a direct result of their association with Jesus.
One at his own hand after he betrayed Jesus and ten were tortured and executed for following Him and refusing to deny Him or stop preaching His Message.
Number twelve on that list was John the Beloved, he was tortured, boiled in oil, he just wouldn’t die, but he still suffered greatly and was exiled to Patmos for Name of Jesus.
Many, many more, Millions even, have suffered and died as a result of their relationship with Jesus.
Christianity is Not for the faint of Heart!

Jesus said, “……If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Luke 9:23
Deny Yourself, Take up your cross. Nothing pleasant in either of those requirements to join up.

Christianity that cost nothing is not Christianity, but a social club.

Until you are willing to die for Jesus can you really say you have lived for Him?

Danger is also part of the experience.  The growth of the Church throughout history has been much greater during times of persecution and trouble, Trials and tribulations.
Also, going into the Highways and Hedges is in many cases, to put oneself in harm’s way, yet we are called to do it.

Regardless of the Price, the benefits far outweigh the negatives. There is a Peace that passes understanding.  There is Joy, which is our Strength. There is Hope. There is Strength.  There is even Comfort.  But most of All there is Love, Love that compels You to stand, Love that strengthens you for the battles, Love that excites and encourages when there is no sensible reason for either.  Love that may cost you everything, BUT will reward you far more than you can ask or think.  And after all this, Heaven awaits the faithful.

It’s when the Church gets comfortable that it loses its edge.  When we are satisfied with the normal three services in a week, our daily personal devotions and then go about the rest of the week living like the world, without reaching into the gutter for a soul or seeking God to lead us to revival.

I don’t believe we have scratched the surface of what God wants for us or from us.  I know I’m not at my full potential for Him.  I also believe the Church is poised for great things, but what will be the catalyst that brings that change? What will be the cost? I do not yet know, but it will be worth whatever the price.
My daily prayer is that God gives me a revelation of Him, a revelation of his people, and gives me wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to help me have a clear vision of what is Important. And when it’s over, to hear Him say “Well Done.”

God Bless You
Greg

Go Down Moses

A couple days ago the chorus of the old song “Go Down Moses” popped into my head.
I hadn’t heard it in years but remember my Sisters and me singing it as small children.  I don’t know any of the verses and only vaguely ever remember hearing them.
According to the interweb, the Lutheran Hymnal has it listed as being titled “When Israel was in Egypt’s land.”

All I remember is a repeat of these few words.

Go down Moses,
Down in Eygpt’s Land
Tell Ol’ Pharaoh,
Let My People Go

As I drove to work, I spontaneously started belting out those words over and over.  And then began to think upon the story, the faith, albeit a little shaky at first, that allowed Moses to follow the command of God to go into Eygpt and rescue God’s people.

When God called Moses at the Burning Bush, he made some excuses, like they won’t listen or I can’t speak very well.  One by one God took away his excuses.  Finally, God turned his staff into a serpent that Moses could see that our limitations are NOT God’s limitations.  That He is not bound by natural constraints and that through Him, neither are we.

The Church has the same basic call on it today that he gave Moses, Go into the World and rescue His children.  I’ve said it over and over that, “not everyone will heed the message but everyone deserves to hear it,” and it’s the Churches job to get that done.
The Devil, like Pharaoh, is not going to give up without a fight. He’s going to try to hold them down, keep them oppressed by the sins and cares of this life. We have to stay in tune with God, be loving, kind, patient, and understanding. And remember that Receiving the Lord, becoming a Christian is the beginning of the journey. Never expect a new child of God to be perfect or to know anything, let alone everything.  The Children of Isreal didn’t cross the Red Sea into the Promised Land, there was a long journey before they arrived.

I think a lot of us miss out on Great Works because we wait on God to change our situation so we can do a work for him.  When in truth He’s waiting on us to do a work before He changes our situation.  If we wait for things to be perfect before we step out, we’ll likely dry up and die right where we sit, waiting.

Trust in the Lord, He has it worked out, He has a plan. It doesn’t have to make sense to us, God knows what He’s doing. Trust that He’ll put ground under your foot when he asks you to take a step, and you can’t see anything for your feet to land.  Walk by faith, not sight, and He will make a way.

The Bible says that the Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom, and I believe that the acceptance of His Will is the beginning of Joy and Peace.  He will not leave you Comfortless, trust Him.  God calls who He will for works, usually beyond our comfort zone. When He calls, GO! Go down into whatever land he sends you.
Just remember if God brings you to It, He will bring you through It.

God Bless You Richly,
Greg
