Look at Me

Written by Rev. Dustin Midkiff

“Look at me!” I exclaimed for what seemed like the millionth time. Truthfully, I don’t know how many times I had made that simple request, but it was enough that now the frustration was evident in my voice. My son, now aware that he had crossed a line pulled himself back to reality and quickly met my gaze. After explaining again why it was important for him to perform whatever menial task I had asked of him I followed it up with, “Goodness, son! I wish you’d learn to listen.” That scenario is repeated daily in our home. We have small children, so it’s just a fact of life. Why was this one different? I’m so glad you asked.

It’s no secret to anyone who has been a part of the Body of Christ for any significant amount of time that sometimes it gets tough. There will be times when it feels like the darkness will strangle you. Times when it seems like your last hope has walked out on you and you are left to face the enemy completely alone. Times when it feels like your prayers are sucked up by the vacuum of space almost before they reach your lips. Times when the dollar signs and zeros on a screen tell you that your much hoped for blessing hasn’t arrived in time to save you from financial distress. I know, I’ve been there, it isn’t pleasant.

So, why remind us of it? Isn’t it better not to think of such things? How does this help the situation? Truthfully, I don’t know why I’m sharing this today. Perhaps it has no effect on you. Maybe everything is going your way with no distress in sight. There’s no way for me to know outside you sharing it with me. However, given my own recent struggles I want to share something with you.

Today I was reminded of a scripture in Hosea chapter 2 verses 14 and15.

“Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.”

Why does it have to be the wilderness? Why can’t God speak the words of comfort to me in a place of comfort? It’s dark in the wilderness. There are dangers there that one might avoid by staying nearer to the safety of home. It’s so quiet when you’re alone in the wild places. Why here? What’s so special about the wilderness?

That’s question I was asking. The answer I got was to be reminded of that frustrating interaction with my son. I suddenly became aware of what God had been trying to say. “Look at me! Just look at me! Instead of being distracted by the chaos and noise of the struggle…just look at me! I had to bring you out into the darkness and solitude of the desert place because you couldn’t hear me where you were! Now that we are here, I just want you to listen.”

Perhaps God is saying the same thing to you? Is it a bit overwhelming where you are? Does it seem like the darkness might actually win this time? Does the giant look bigger than ever today? Maybe it’s time to go out into the night, gaze up at the stars and say…”God I just came to listen. I’ll still be right here when you are ready to speak.” Give it a try. Maybe, just maybe you’ll hear Him say…”The way out of the storm is this way, Child…I’ve been waiting for you to follow me so I could show you the way.”

Be Blessed,

Bro. Dustin

Why the Valley

I’d ask Brother Dustin Midkiff to contribute to this anytime he had a thought or a message he feels like sharing.  He hasn’t disappointed. This is well worth the read and I’m sure will bless you as it did me.

Why the Valley

You’d think at this point in life that valleys would be less surprising when they happen, but I don’t think we’re ever truly prepared for just how hard things can get sometimes. We have no knowledge of what tomorrow may hold, and while we make plans how often does everything happen exactly the way we expect? One phone call can change everything…for better or worse. You and I certainly are not the first to ponder the meaning of valleys. Consider the following.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 tells us “I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.”

Solomon observed everything that surrounded him and realized that no one escapes the common trials of life. As he said “time and chance happeneth to them all.”

So, why is it that I feel alone when going through MY trial? Why do I ask the same things every time I must go through the valley? “Why am I here? Why does it feel like everything is shrouded in the shadow of uncertainty, and why do unexpected pain and regret seem to be popping up with such alarming frequency. What is this place…this valley where I feel most alone? Why must I be here, and what lesson must I learn before I am allowed to leave?”

Recent trials have led me back to these same questions, and my purpose for writing is to share with you the answer I believe I was given.

The short answer is…that I might be saved. Makes perfect sense, right? Allow me to explain. My pondering over personal disappointment led me to this verse. Isaiah 12:2-3 “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.”

It struck me that this verse was all about valleys. Think about it. How many wells have you seen on top of a mountain? I can’t think of one, but I have seen plenty in the valley between the mountains. If we think of the mountain as the moments where everything is going great, then what lessons do we learn about TRUST when we are there?

Two things in particular stand out to me in reading this passage. Number one, I have to WILL myself to trust and not be afraid. The writer said “I WILL, trust and not be afraid…”. When nothing makes sense…I WILL trust in whom I have placed all my hopes. MY trust is MY choice.

Number two, Joy must be my constant companion while in the valley if I am to access God’s salvation. It is the utensil I use to draw from Salvation’s well! “…With JOY shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” In my moments of doubt its time to go back to the well, get ahold of Joy, and take another drink!

If you find yourself in the valley today, Sir/Ma’am…Trust in the Lord, and cling to Joy! It’s going to be alright! The darkness shall soon give way to morning!

God Bless You Today!
Bro. Dustin

Endure

Rev. Dustin Midkiff posted this last week, and I asked if I could share it here. It’s a great message and well worth the read.  I hope it blesses you as much as it did me.  Bro. Dustin is an eloquent speaker and true man of God, I’m honored to be his friend and blessed to call him nephew.

Endure,

“I just don’t understand!” I had lost count of how many times I had said that to myself or to God in prayer in the last few months. As anyone who has lived through a struggle can attest, it can be very demoralizing. It feels like wandering around a dark room feeling for a light switch only to discover that the switch isn’t located where you remember it anymore.

Sure, there were moments of hope…one more straw to grasp, but they all seemed to lead to dead ends. So, you start over. You feel your way through the darkness and seeming vast empty space around you looking for something solid to grip. Eventually you come back to prayer…it only makes sense. Trust the things you can’t see to the One who sees everything.

So, once again I approached the throne. “God I don’t understand. I thought this would be the way out. Why am I still in the dark with no obvious answers?” The answer came through, and I’m still a little surprised by how much it comforts me. “When did I tell you that you would understand? I only said to endure.” So this is me still in the dark with no obvious answers, but I rejoice because even though I don’t have an answer I still have a word. Endure!

Matthew 10:22 “…he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”

Be Blessed Today,

Bro. Dustin

Back in the garden
I happened to walk
in the cool of the day
With God, I would Talk

Then something happened
and everything changed
I was surely guilty
but others I blamed

I then felt so naked
and now walked alone
His comforting Presence
had left me and gone

The beautiful Garden
grown over and dark
a reflection you see
of the state of my heart

I was the first man
to get lost on the way
I lost out with God
Forever to pay

So, Give heed to my warning
and don’t ever stray
and cherish your walks
in the cool of the day

Pentecost

Blessed Pentecost Sunday

There were a few things that jumped out at me while studying the feast of Pentecost.

They are Anticipation, Pilgrimage, and Harvest.

Anticipation – as a farmer anticipates his crop or a person awaits the return of their true love. It is written that the Feast of Pentecost was highly anticipated, excitement was in the air in the days immediately preceding Pentecost. It’s no coincidence that God chose this day to pour out His Spirit upon mankind
Jesus told the disciples in Luke 24:49 “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”
They knew something big was about to happen.  No human had ever experienced the Comforter before. They didn’t know what to expect, but the knew it was worth waiting for. They were willing to wait, watch and pray until it happened.
When you get tired of the way things are and know something has got to change, you’ll wait, watch, listen and obey his command in order to receive His help.

Pilgrimage – It is one of three pilgrimage feasts for the Jews. People would travel from far and wide to attend.  Again not coincidental that God chose this day to pour out His Spirit. A day that the city would be full of visitors to witness His Glorious Outpouring and hear that message in their own language.
Similerly, a personal pilgrimage must be taken before the Spirit of God will dwell within us, we cannot get to our personal Holy of Holies without taking a journey within our own spirit. A Pilgrimage of Repentance, cleaning out the clutter, the junk, the bad habits and the sin that we accumulate through this life. I’m not saying you can fix everything you’ve broken yourself before you call on Him, but you can turn it all over to Jesus and let him do the work. Surrendering all to God will open the door for the indwelling of The Holy Spirit.

Harvest – the Jews celebrated the First Fruits of the harvest during this feast. God poured out His Spirit on the hundred and twenty, on the day of Pentecost and then increased the Harvest by about three thousand souls.
Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
Imagine being apart of that revival.  Going from Not a Church to a hundred and twenty member congregation to an approximately 3120 member congregation in a matter of a few hours.
That excites me! Whats stopping us? Where is our revival? Where is our 3000 souls added to the church?  I don’t have all those answers, but I Know without a doubt that We’re not waiting on God, God is waiting on Us!

May God Bless You mightily and Pour out His Spirit upon You.
Greg

Lamb and Lion

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world

Jesus knew his destiny, what he came to Earth for. He knew that He was to be the Sacrificial Lamb and purchase Salvation for a lost and dying world.

When I think of his willingness to be The Sacrifice for my sins, I can’t help but think how unworthy I am. What a Mighty Love! What a Mighty God! And then to think, had I been the only one He still would have paid the price for me. Had you been the only one He would have died for you.

Now skip ahead to the 18th chapter of John. In the garden, the day they came to take Jesus away to die for your sins.  The book of John records a detail that is not mentioned in the other gospels.  Jesus knew what they were there for, but he asked who are you looking for. They replied Jesus of Nazareth and Jesus answered: “I am He”.  Look what chapter 18 verse 6 has to say.

John 18:6 (KJV) As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.

It was like a bomb went off when Jesus said those words, they all went backward and fell to the ground.  Just the Power in his voice caused them to all fall down.

He was about to be the Lamb, but I believe that for just one second he wanted to show them that He was also the Lion of Judah, so He let out a little Lion’s Roar, I Am He! And I don’t believe he shouted, I think he just spoke it, but the power was released.

He then surrendered to them and ushered in our hope of Salvation. That price has been paid in full. It’s still in full effect. His death paid it all.

Jesus is also still the Lion of Judah. You can call out to Him, and his power can still make your situations go backward and fall to the ground. The mention of the Name of Jesus and all the universe takes notice.  Power to heal, to deliver and to Save all in his beautiful Name.

When we need a Lamb to take away our sins, Jesus Is!
When we need a Lion to help us stand against the enemy, Jesus Is!

Whatever the situation He Is!

God Bless You Richly,
Greg

Little Bears

Once upon a time, I worked a pipeline job in North Central Pennsylvania in the heart of maple syrup country.  I was there through the fall change of colors, and it was beautiful. The highway that we traveled to and from the Right of Way was so beautiful that it was listed as a must ride road by one of the motorcycle magazines. You really can’t explain the beauty of that part of the county at that time of the year.
Every few miles was a bear crossing sign and in between those were maple syrup shops. The shops had an “Old Timey” feel to them, and I loved stopping by and just taking it all in.  One particular store, I don’t recall the name had caught my attention, and I finally stopped by to check it out.  Behind the counter was a particularly crusty older gentleman, sadly I don’t remember his name either, that seemed eager to strike up a conversation.

Somehow our discussion turned to the Bear population in that area.  The old man explained that many years earlier, overhunting and sickness had decimated their numbers, and for 30 to 40 years they had all but disappeared.  Then a decade or so earlier a wildlife conservation group started a bear relocation program. They planned to relocate bears from another location to reestablish their population in that area. I’m sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, after all, who doesn’t love a “come from behind” success story.

Over a decade or so, the bear population exploded, that part of the story was a huge success, but my new friend was not impressed.  He complained that these creatures are basically giant, extremely hungry raccoons.  They’ll strow your trash, destroying your trash cans in the process, plunder through your stuff and get inside house or car if either is left open. They’ll destroy anything that looks, smells like or could possibly resemble food.  They will also harass, chase, and attack people and pets on occasion. And they can Kill people under certain circumstances.  And perhaps just as dangerous are the highway accidents they caused either by being hit by a car or causing people to run off a cliff trying to avoid them.  Numerous times I saw dead bears along the highway.

Public Service Announcement: I didn’t fact check his version of Bear History in North Central Pennsylvania, but it seems logical.  Accounts I’ve read from other areas seem to reinforce that at least it could be true.

After that discussion, I thought a lot about what he’d said

For 40 odd years the bears were gone, for good reason or bad, they were gone
For 40 years no one had their trash scattered by a bear.
For 40 years not a single person in that region was attacked by a bear
For 40 years no one was chased, harassed, or threatened by a bear
For 40 years no one walked out of their house to be staring into the eyes of a bear
For 40 years no one was injured in a bear caused an automobile accident

  Then the bears returned.
I’m sure there were a lot of seemingly good reasons for reintroducing bears to the area, like increased tourism, and Bear watching.  Besides, what’s cuter than a fuzzy little bear cub stumbling around getting into mischief. Kids all over the world have small plush likenesses of a bear cub, possibly one of the first memories for many.
The first few years were likely not that bad. But soon they found out that bringing them back would change their lives, and not for the better.

Getting rid of the Bears:
When we are Born again, and all things become new, old things are passed away, behold all things are become new.
In our new found zeal to please God, we gladly put away old things to be pleasing to Christ, and He gives us deliverance and helps us in laying aside every weight and the sin which did so easily beset us.  But as new creatures become Not so New, and if we’re not careful our prayer time will go from “On fire and without ceasing” to “sometimes” to “I forgot” to Not!  The enemy will take this opportunity to convince us that the burden of sin wasn’t really that heavy and think about how much you enjoyed it. Or remember how wrong you were done, or on and on we could go.  How quickly we forget where we were delivered from. Then comes the “I can handle it,” and “it’s just a small thing” thoughts.

 Side Bar:
Another thing that occurred to me about past sins. Some of the things we were delivered from were easier to avoid 30 years ago. Certain magazines or movies that you may have looked at, or watched, or been addicted to. You had to risk being seen going into a seedy shop or ask the store clerk to hand you a copy of that book.  A risk that a “Good Christian” would not take. Those things were in a separate, secluded area, or in a different store altogether, which made those items easier to avoid.  But now with smartphones always in our hands, computers, internet and 1000 channels of digital anything, we have access to any and everything without the stigma of being seen and feeling the condemnation of our peers.
Things that were once only sold at a specialty store, like liquor, now have their own aisle dedicated to them at the superstores and every other grocery store. You can just slip it down in your buggy with only minimal risk of the prying eyes and condemnation of your church family or neighbors. You never even have to darken the door of a liquor store.  The enemy of our souls wants sin to be convenient, he wants it available when you have a weak moment.

  Beware of the Bear
I’m not only talking about the apparent sins but what about the weights? The things that may or not be sin, but burden us down and hinder our ability to have a victorious Christian walk, like fear, anger, past wrongs, and hurts.  God wanted the weights and the sin gone forever so you could be free.  Free to serve and worship him without distraction, free that you can lead lost souls to Jesus, free that you can live a joy-filled life, free to spend eternity in his presence. Free!

Once the door to sin is opened, even to little sins, it’s hard to close!
Little bears can cause a lot of damage.  They will plunder and root around in every place, drag your stuff out and rip it to shreds. All the while growing into full-grown bears that are able to destroy your life.  Like the little Hidden Sins that will eventually come forth and destroy your walk and then your life.

There’s a song from several years ago (the Cathedrals, I believe)  with a verse something like:
“Sin will take you farther than you really want to go
Sin will teach you things you don’t really want to know
Sin will cost you more than you will want to pay
Sin will keep you longer than you ever planned to stay.”

I’m sure that’s not exact words, but you get the message.

We must guard our souls, trust in the Lord, for he wants us Victorious.
He Cleans our hearts, our homes and every aspect of our lives when He makes us new.
We must stay in Love with Him, go to Him every day, and become new every day to keep the bears away!

Psalms 68:19 (KJV) Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.

God Bless You Richly,
Greg

The Appointment

Let’s say you are not feeling well and you realize you need to see a doctor
You search and find a doctor, and make an appointment.
The appointment day comes, and you get squeaky clean and head off to see the doctor.
As usual, the doctor’s assistant checks your weight, height, temp, and BP and then does a quick Q&A about your symptoms.
Then scurries away saying the doctor will be in shortly.
30 minutes go by.
Then an hour!
Finally, the doctor rushes through the door, never looking up at you, but only reading the chart.
So, the doctor says, it says here that your eyes are yellow, correct?
You say “yes.”
He says, Ok, Ok. So, it says that you have tenderness in your abdomen, Correct?
You reply “yes.”
Good, good, he continues, so you have a rash and flaky skin, is that correct?
Again you say “yes.”
Then he says, Alright, Ok! So, it also says you are tired a lot, is that right?
You reply “Yes” yet again!
Finally, he says, Ok, it’s good you came in today!
So I’m going to write you a prescription for some Eye drops and while at the Pharmacy get some Pepcid, some Iron tablets, and some skin lotion.
That should take care of it. The nurse will be back in a few, have a beautiful day.

And he’s gone like a flash.

Now imagine the doctor was not there at all, and his assistant diagnosed you and gave you the same treatment regimen.

Either situation would be a terrible experience.
They’ve only treated the symptoms of what could be any number of Liver Diseases or many other ailments for that matter.

A good doctor would have asked some more pointed questions and ran a series of tests to determine the issue and treat based on the results.  Then the symptoms will start to get better once the disease is treated.

Now, let’s look at it from another angle.

We are the Doctor’s Assistant, we work in a clinic that only treats One disease!

Remember we are NOT the Physician, only his assistant.
Every patient will have different symptoms, but the disease is always the same.

We can try to diagnose and treat symptoms, but all we are really supposed to do is usher them into the Physicians presence.

Not fix them, just bring them to the Physician!

The Sickness is a lost state of being, a separation from God’s Saving Grace!
Sin, in all of its forms, is the symptoms.

Our Job is to reach them,
Not save them
Not fix them
Not heal them
Only to reach them.

The Blood of Jesus Christ is the Power to save them. God does the work, we just lead them to Jesus and then get to share in the blessings and glory.

When we try to fix lost souls ourselves, we can only address the symptoms of their lost condition.  This will often lead to a failure to reach them by pushing them away.
Love them, show them Christ’s love, be patient. Try to remember they are not even born yet, not even New Born Babies yet.  Once they are born, and the spirit is within them, the preached word and the convicting power of the Holy Ghost will lead them to a Godly walk.

God will Save
God will Fix
God will Heal
God will Deliver

All we have to do is get in touch with the Physician for them, share His Love, Tell of His Grace, and he’ll do the rest.
Don’t be discouraged, as I have said before Not everyone will be Reached, but Everyone deserves to be Reached For!  Keep Reaching, keep trusting in Jesus, and He will direct thy path.

Do your job, let God do His!

God Bless You richly!

A Good Shepherd

My Mom told me about a conversation she’d been in recently and one man’s comment intrigued me very much.  I’m sure it has been around forever, but to my knowledge, I’d had never heard it. It started me down the path to this post, it was something like

“A good shepherd is not afraid to smell like the sheep!”

I began to examine myself by this, looking into the mirror and into my own heart.  I want and need to know what God expects from me as a Minister, as a child of God and as a Man (Husband, father, pawpaw, employee, etc.).

I have been blessed with several Good and Faithful Shepherds through my walk.  Men that stood shoulder to shoulder with me, sometimes propping me up, during some of my darkest hours.  I’ve since realized that the ministry fights the same kind of battles we do, all the while fighting yours as if it was the most important cause ever.  You are not always going to agree with them but understand that they could be helping you overcome while battling something even bigger themselves.  We need to pray for them daily and with them often for both our sakes.

So What sets them apart?  What makes them approachable?  What is it about them that makes you smile when you see them? Or uncomfortable when there is sin in the camp? What is it that makes you feel like you can share, with this person, all your dreams, hopes, and failures without fear condemnation or ridicule?

There are many other qualities that I’m sure can be added to this list but here are a few attributes that qualify and separate the Shepherds from the Hirelings.

  • Love and dedication to our Lord Jesus Christ before all else.
  • A Prayer Life or a Life of Prayer
  • Devotion to unwavering Truth
  • Genuine Love for the souls of man
  • Godly Kindness, even while chastising
  • Wisdom from the Throne of Grace
  • Knowing the Word, Studying to show Himself approved unto God
  • A Fearless Guard of his flock
  • Seeking God’s anointed Will before his own
  • Humble, giving all Glory unto God

1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV) “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud” is a short look at what is expected of all of us, as sheep and shepherds.

As emissaries of Jesus Christ, we must strive for the same qualities we expect from our Pastors if we are going to win the lost and live a victorious life.  As Sheep we are REQUIRED to respect our shepherd, we must honor him and obey his message as he obeys Christ.  Romans 10:14 …..and how shall they hear without a preacher?

A good Shepherd will not get lifted up in his position, but with humility continue to dwell among the sheep and lead from the front of the flock. He has to be close to them if he is to know their needs and guide and defend them adequately. He also has the job of chastising when they go astray.

Sheep must know their Shepherds voice. They follow and submit to the shepherd that they know and trust.  He has to know where they are going to get them there safely. And they must trust that he does and follow his leading.  But usually, that means He has to go there first.  It’s not an easy job, the constant bleating of the sheep, the smell, the sacrifices of home and family,  and always on duty 24/7.  Is it worth the trouble?

Am I or can I become a Faithful Shepherd? Do I have the qualities? What can and must I do to be pleasing to God in whatever role He places me in? These are some of my questions to God?

We should all, Sheep and Shepherd alike, ask God these questions about our walk.  Pray, Pray, Pray for your Pastor that God will bless, encourage, strengthen, uplift,  give wisdom, and help him to be the Perfect example of God’s Love.  If you are like me, I’m sure my Pastor welcomes the Prayers, and I definitely need the practice!

One single quote started my heart and mind onto this path of self-examination both from a Shepherd and a Sheep’s perspective!

“A good shepherd is not afraid to smell like the sheep!”

I thank God for all the Pastors in my life past and present, that live up to the Biblical expectation of a Pastor and have set the bar High for all the rest of us. May God help me measure up!

Thanks, Momma, I Love You

God-Shaped Hole

A special place created
And though we may not see
It has such great potential
Or a dark place it can be

When left to its devices
It fills with dangerous things
But used as its intended
Great joy and gladness brings

Though modern man likes to say
This place does not exist
And even as we feel it’s void
We continue to resist

We think we’ve left it empty
But bad things lie in wait
We think that we are in control
But evil storms the gate

This place will have a master
Though lonely, not alone
As Darkness takes up residence
And Evil calls it home

It has but one true purpose
A Throne Room if you will
Surrender to Christ Jesus
He Longs Our Souls to Fill

For He gave His all on Calvary
A ransom for lost souls
To call us out of darkness,
To fill that God Shaped Hole

God Bless You richly,
Greg
